MG Cyberster rolls out with over 84,000 in two minutes
An eye-catching unveiling of a new MG sports car
Debut piques curiosity
The new MG Cyberster, an all-electric roadster, sold out its first 84,000 units in two minutes of its April 20, 2023, launch in China. The electric vehicle has a 500-kilometer range on a single charge and can reach 60 miles per hour in less than three seconds.
With the MG Cyberster, SAIC Motor, the parent company of MG and China's largest automaker, hopes to take on the likes of Tesla and Nio in the global electric vehicle market. The Cyberster name pays homage to MG's classic MGB roadster of the 1960s and 1970s, while the car's design draws inspiration from other iconic sports cars like the Mazda MX-5 Miata and the Porsche Boxster.
The Cyberster's sleek silhouette is highlighted by classic sports car cues like a long hood, short deck, and two doors. The front of the car features a large grille flanked by sharp LED headlights, while the rear has a diffuser and quad exhaust tips.
Inside, the Cyberster has a minimalist interior with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch infotainment screen. It also has a flat-bottomed steering wheel and sport seats.
The Cyberster is powered by a single electric motor producing 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels through a single-speed transmission. The Cyberster's battery pack is located in the floor of the car and has a capacity of 54.3 kilowatt-hours.
The Cyberster is still in its early stages of development, and the price and release date have not yet been announced. However, MG has said it plans to launch the car in China and Europe in 2024.
The Cyberster's strong debut in China is expected to boost MG's global sales, which have been declining in recent years. The company hopes the Cyberster will help to improve its brand image and attract new customers.
