Kevin McCarthy Resigns from Congress
Former House Speaker Leaving at End of Year
McCarthy Announces Departure in Wall Street Journal Editorial
Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has announced that he will resign from Congress at the end of this year. McCarthy made the announcement in a Wall Street Journal editorial published on Thursday, January 26. In his editorial, McCarthy said that he has "come to the realization that my service in Congress is no longer effective." He added that he believes it is "time for a new generation of leaders to step up and take our country in a new direction."
McCarthy was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2007. He served as House Minority Leader from 2019 to 2023. In 2023, McCarthy was elected Speaker of the House, but he faced significant opposition from within his own party. He was forced to make several concessions in order to secure the speakership, and his leadership was often criticized.
McCarthy's resignation is the latest in a series of departures from Congress. Several other Republican members have also announced that they will not seek re-election in 2024. This exodus of experienced lawmakers could have a significant impact on the balance of power in the House of Representatives.
